Bonjour!

As we bounce along from one deadline to the next, it continues to be very much business as usual and indeed our current business volumes have increased significantly as a result of the current indecision in British politics.

Wine prices, UK duty and why it makes sense to buy your wines at Boursot’s Wine Collection

The euro stands currently at around 1.158 to the pound. Clearly there could be a significant movement in either direction according to any political developments in the UK.

Wine prices in France remain pretty stable especially after the 2018 harvest which in general had good quantity as well as good quality.

However, as of 1st February 2019, UK duty on wine was raised yet again by the British government and this tax now stands at a flat-rate of £2.23 per bottle pre-VAT (£2.68 including VAT) while sparkling wine’s now stands at £2.86 pre-VAT (£3.43 including VAT). The average selling price of a bottle of wine in the UK is currently £5.68 of which 56% comprises tax!

In France there is only a negligible rate of duty of around £0.03 per bottle, thanks to the country being a major provider of wine.

Then to these UK costs need to be added importers’ and retailers’ margins and VAT. You don’t need to be a mathematician to work out that if you’re buying wines for a party or a wedding, you are hundreds and often thousands of pounds better off by buying your wines in France and under current European dispensations, you are allowed to travel with as much wine as you like if it’s for your personal consumption. It is something to take advantage of whilst you can.

To put this into perspective, if you are buying a bottle of wine in the UK at say £5, 61% of the cost of that bottle is tax - there really is not much “wine” in the cost of that bottle! You get a much higher proportion of “wine” in your purchase in France than is possible in the UK thanks to these hugely different rates of tax. In addition to the prices savings, another prime reason why people come to us is to buy more “interesting” wines that are often not available in the UK or if they are, they are grossly inflated prices because retailers consider them risky, not being “mainstream” enough.

Many of you say the same thing - voiced by one happy customer "One has to be crazy to buy wines in Britain. Virtually no choice on the high street and when you can find something interesting, it's ridiculously expensive... This (coming to Ardres) is so much fun, it's so easy, we make a day of it and everyone is happy".

If you should be concerned about falling exchange rates and have a large party or wedding to cater for, we are of course happy to accept your forward payments and we will secure these against the stocks that you require. Payment can be made safely by card on www.boursot.co.uk/secure.html which simply sends me an encrypted e-mail. Alternatively you can pay by bank or peer to peer transfer and we will send you our bank details on request.

Getting across the channel in just 35 minutes is so easy and as one of our customers, you can take advantage of our FREE or 34€ travel offers with Eurotunnel. Our Offer is for cars or vans for same day or next day returns. Simply click on the Eurotunnel logo on our home page to send us your travel preferences and we will make the booking for you, subject to availability of course. You then receive an e-mail ticket confirmation directly from Eurotunnel.

In addition to providing such great value, we provide an enjoyable day out (ok - I know many of you come straight over, load up and go straight back but…!) with a variety of good restaurants and shops specialising in all sorts of French delicacies. There is no shortage of things to do whilst you’re here. "The best day-trip you could wish for!": the words from one of our TripAdvisor reviews. Do contact us if you should like help to make the most out of your trip.

We also have advantageous arrangements for you with some local hotels and B&Bs if you’d like to stay overnight, and some of these may be found on this link. With all our wine, travel, restaurant and accommodation benefits available to you, this is an excellent time to hop across. And apart from the wine, there are many groceries, and of course diesel, that are still much less expensive in France than in the UK, despite whatever interested parties might tell you about exchange rates!

In buying your wines at Boursot's Wine Collection, you get a reliably superior quality and value. With its selection starting at around £3.40 per bottle, Boursot's has developed a reputation for taking some of the confusion and risk out of buying decent French wines, and with its British owner and experienced English speaking staff, you will always receive good wine advice. And you can taste many of the wines as well.

Remember: according to HM Revenue & Customs you can take back as much wine as you like from France to Britain, provided that it's for your personal consumption. If you want to take back a lorry full of wine for your own use at weddings and parties, you are perfectly within your rights to do so.

Boursot's Shop in Marquise

With plenty of free parking Boursot's shop and warehouse is just 10 minutes from the tunnel on the (free) A16 motorway on the way towards Boulogne, Hardelot, Le Touquet, Montreuil, Normandy or Paris. Marquise keeps the same stocks as Ardres.

One of the best wood-fired bakeries of the area is right next door to our warehouse so if you like, you can have a coffee and a baguette or croissant there whilst your car is being loaded with wine.

Marquise is close to the picturesque seaside villages of Wissant and Wimereux with their fine sandy beaches. France’s biggest fishing port, Boulogne-sur-Mer, is just 10 minutes away with all it has to offer and moving southward Hardelot and Le Touquet with their excellent golf courses is another half hour further down the A16 motorway. You will find a list of nearby places to eat or stay on this link.

Opening hours for Marquise are marginally different, being Tuesday to Saturday 10.30 - 5.30 and it is NOT open on Mondays or French bank holidays.

During May, we are offering you 5% off the prices of all wines bought in Marquise.

Spare capacity to rent out

On a different note, we have spare capacity in our warehouse and offices that we own in Marquise. As you may have read above, it is very well located thanks to it being positioned just metres off the main A16 motorway heading south to Paris and Normandy, and north to Belgium, Holland and Germany – and it is just a few minutes from both the tunnel and port in Calais.

If you should be looking for a storage and distribution base just within mainland Europe in case some form of Brexit should befall the UK, then do please contact me so we can explore possibilities.

Weddings

Clearly an important part of our business is in supplying decent quality wines for serving at weddings. The chances are that you already know about our guaranteed quality and value but recommend us and the wedding couple can receive from us a free Eurotunnel ticket and you will receive a free bottle of champagne as a thank-you.

We are delighted to have received so many compliments for our wines transforming a good wedding into a great wedding - and making it all the more memorable for that.

Your Own Wine Events in France

Regularly you ask us to help organise various social events with a wine theme - for groups such as Golf Clubs, Rotary Clubs, U3A, Wine Clubs, Car Clubs, birthday parties, office parties, pre-wedding parties or simply a group of friends.

We have advantageous arrangements with restaurants around the region that provide great quality food at a sensible price, and where you can enjoy our wines at our shop prices without any cost of "corkage", assuming of course that one of us is attending. Typically a four course lunch or dinner including water, coffee and service works out at 29€ all-inclusive and six wines work out at 9€ per person. Clearly these costs can vary according to the level of meal and / or wines you would like, so please call or e-mail for a quote.

One of us can talk a little about the various wines being served, probably concluding with some entertaining words about what's going on currently behind the scenes in the wine world. These events are always fun and they are different: with only 23 miles across that English Channel, yet a million miles away in cultural terms, people always seem delighted to get away for a complete change of scenery and for a bit of French life. It’s a great day out.

You can also enjoy tastings, presentations or general events in the vaulted cellars under our Ardres shop, as can be seen in the photo on our site’s home page. If you should be interested in holding an event for up to 35 people in our cellars, do call or e-mail to discuss your preferences.

And finally, I am of course always happy to travel to you to present wine talks or tastings, or simply to be your after-dinner speaker with a difference! I have rather a lot of experience in this and this is one reason, I suspect, why many clients are good enough to ask me back to speak year after year. A recent testimonial:

“Thank you for your talk and for entertaining our guests so well. When it comes to talking about wine, you’re a class act.” RF, Mayor of W….. – July 2017

You can also see more background on my speaker website www.boursot.com. Do please call or e-mail me to discuss your preferences.

Forthcoming Boursot Events

We host a number of high quality wine dinners at several great local restaurants. Needless to say, these are conducted in English, often by a wine-related guest speaker, whether a winemaker, a vineyard proprietor or even a wine writer! We normally opt for a four-course meal starting with a bubbly reception, followed by at least five more wines. Where we can, we block-book bedrooms at the venue so you don't need to worry about searching out accommodation in the area. It’s all designed to be straightforward and enjoyable for you.

Vegetarian and alternative food options can of course be provided, as long as we receive some advance notice. If a planned guest speaker is unable to attend, we will endeavour to find another speaker and if none is available, Guy Boursot will present the talk.

After a Saturday evening dinner, the nearest of the Boursot's Wine Collection shops is open on the Sunday morning.

Perhaps you have an anniversary to celebrate or you just want to get away for a change of pace and scenery? You are of course most welcome to bring some friends to make up a small group (normally to a maximum of eight please).

Please contact us on ardres@boursot.co.uk or on +33 321 36 81 46 to book for any of our events below.

Saturday 22 June: Dinner at Hôtel Château des Tourelles, Le Wast: “The Global Evolution of the Wine Business” with Laurent Cagnat

As our guest speaker this evening we have Laurent Cagnat who has a lifetime experience all around the wine world. Apart from being a good friend who speaks impeccable English, he makes a lot of sense and will be able to answer any question you may have about wine and its trends.

This hotel château, whilst being quite modest, has a good reputation for the quality of its cuisine. Rooms too are reasonably priced and we have blocked off a number of bedrooms, so do please say if you would like one from our allocation.

Tickets are available now at 84€ per person to include four courses, six wines and all entertainment.

Sunday 7th July: Mid-Summer Lunch at the Moulin d’Audenfort: precise detail to be confirmed

This is always a fun lunch at this old mill house set on the banks of river Hem, which runs through the beautiful rolling countryside about 10 minutes south of Ardres. In the past we have enjoyed our reception bubbly in the gardens before going through to the main dining room. The food is good and the rooms are simple but it is tranquil and the only disturbance comes from the babbling water flowing past.

To accompany the lunch Guy Boursot will talk you through six wines that make ideal Summer drinking and talk about current hot topics in the wine world. It will be fun.

We have asked to block bedrooms and are awaiting the auberge’s confirmation.

The four course lunch, water and coffee included, will be 55€ per person and tickets are available now.

Saturday 21 September: Domaine de l’Arjolle Dinner at Hotel La Matelote, Boulogne sur Mer

Geoffroy de la Besnardière, one of the partners of this innovative domaine in the Languedoc, is back to talk about how his winery is at the forefront of modern winemaking while using naturally controlled viticulture. For example you may have noticed that they have introduced Zinfandel and Carmenère vines to their vineyards, and are always on the lookout to create new wines of great interest.

We have block booked bedrooms at this hotel with Michelin starred cuisine. The hotel also has an indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi and hammam so you can unwind even further!

This will be a spectacular evening of interesting wines, great commentary and excellent food - tickets are available now at 89€ per person.

For all events we charge 50% of the event in advance to secure your places with the last 50% being payable on the day of the event. To book, please go to our encrypted page on www.boursot.co.uk/secure.html. Regarding the hotel you would of course settle with reception directly when you check out.

Views on the World of Wine

You often ask me as a wine presenter and writer to tell you my thoughts about what appears to be happening currently in the global wine market. Here is a collection of my latest thoughts.

Through all the current British turbulence, it has of course been business as usual here in Ardres. Indeed there has been a lot of just-in-case stockpiling by some customers, given all the uncertainties in the UK. As one couple said in buying their wine requirements for their wedding in September 2020, they would have felt silly if the European cross-channel shopping dispensation had changed as a result of B**x*t and they had not taken the opportunity!

Regardless of whatever form Brexit might or might not take, things cannot get any better or seamless than they are currently so it would be eminently sensible for you not to delay but to take advantage and buy your wine requirements now.

The biggest wine and spirit brand owners seem to be changing at an extraordinary pace. The French owned spirits giant Ricard has been forced by its new US investor to review its winery portfolio, and brands that have been underperforming are being sold off. Ricard currently owns household names such as Campo Viejo, Jacob’s Creek, Brancott Estate and Mumm champagne. The company is also working out how to get involved in the potential cannabis drinks market, now that cannabis production has been legalised in Canada. This will be the next “big thing”. Treasury Wine Estates, owners of Penfolds, is acquiring several vineyards around France and is planning to produce a Penfolds champagne very shortly. I am sure they will not remain quiet when they do launch!

Oddbins with 45 shops, only saved last time in 2011, has fallen again into the hands of administrators – so, that didn’t last long and was hardly a surprise to anyone in the Trade. The company, in my view, lacked a niche and over the years has gone through many different owners, rarely managing to turn in a profit without considerable help from outside. Probably its finest moment was back in the 1980s when it was owned by Seagram who also owned or managed several major brands such as 100 Pipers Scotch, Chivas Regal, Absolut vodka, Perrier-Jouët and Mumm champagnes, Wolff Blass in Australia and Montana in New Zealand among others. This allowed margin from the production end of the supply chain to be passed down the line to retail. But whilst Seagram did quite well out of marketing wines and spirits, it didn’t seem exciting enough for the owners, the Bronfman family. So off they went - into the film industry!

The news that Majestic is looking to completely change direction has been baffling so far to most observers. For many years the chain was pursuing its goal of 200 stores around the UK and then, once achieved, Majestic found that the retail market had changed and now wants to rebrand as Naked Wines and refocus its activities online. Cards are being kept close to chests for the time being as plans of divesting stores and developing its rebranded online presence are being thought through. More announcements are expected in June, when it will be interesting to hear the considered reaction of the chain’s financial advisors.

Many major retailers in the UK bought and shipped where possible their year’s requirements ahead of the possible end-March Brexit watershed moment. The sheer additional costs have been eye-watering and in line with many other industry sectors, whilst sales from vineyards were strong in the first quarter, it remains to be seen how the rest of the year pans out.

The annual en primeur campaign is now warming up in Bordeaux in which the infant wines of 2018 are tasted, priced and sold. In general, 2018 looks to be a very good vintage and after a warm wet spring there were hot dry conditions, producing wines with deep colour and intense tannins. Almost inevitably after the dampness of spring, mildew developed in the vines which had the effect of reducing the potential yield. Having said that, any yield might be considered generous after the tiny 2017 harvest.

It will be the heat that will decide on the potential longevity of these wines; so many of them seem to have high alcohol levels and a shortage of acidity that is an important element for wines’ ageing. Prices appear to be opening modestly but as usual the Bordelais await the reactions of journalists before releasing more tranches of their wines at adjusted prices.

Since Britain became a “mature market” for wine, producers all over the world have turned their focus toward the burgeoning demand from emerging economies particularly in the Far East. One of the fastest rising markets in the wine world at the moment is Japan which has been looking to take up any available allocations of stocks. The Japanese love affair with high quality wine has become near-insatiable while the other titan in the area, China, has seen its rising demand stabilise over the last couple of years. When ostentatiousness fell out of vogue in China, demand for the finest waned but more accessibly priced wines are now being enjoyed and again stocks of more reasonably priced wines are being snapped up.

Wine is still seen generally as something quite smart, whilst “fine wine” is often a magnet to some of the world’s more moneyed individuals. A contributory reason for this is that if the purchasers decide not to drink the wine, they can always sell it – and often at a substantial profit. In turn, this of course has fuelled the IGW (Investment Grade Wine) fine wine business which remains mostly focussed on Bordeaux with its longer-lived classics.

Looking at the various areas around France, in Burgundy, whilst the prime vineyards of the Côte d’Or are always attractive in terms of their wines’ flavours, many wines from the more exclusive appellations such as Meursault and Montrachet have become simply too expensive and the only buyers seem to be what I call “the label buyers” from economies such as China. I am told the Australians have stopped buying Burgundy (for the moment at least).

Bordeaux appears to be going through another of its cycles in which the Grands Crus Classés appear to be priced far too high. These producers believe that they can always sell these top end and limited production wines but their prices have gone out of the reach of the average mortal. We have of course seen this price bubble deflate several times in the past and so I hope we might see some price stability in Bordeaux for a while now but we do wait to see what the en primeur campaign, as mentioned earlier, generates in terms of interest.

Generally modern customers are looking for value and more fruit in their wines and for this reason the Languedoc and the Rhône are two areas of increasing interest. Quality continues to rise in these warm areas providing drinkers with wines that are not sought by investors thus offering better value. There is also experimentation with rediscovered vines such as Carignan and indeed you may recall that we list the Zinfandel (rich and powerful red) and in the past we have listed the Carmenère (medium weight and slightly spicy red) from the innovative Domaine de l’Arjolle. See above for our dinner with the charismatic Geoffroy de la Besnardière from Domaine de l’Arjolle on Saturday 21 September.

The 2018 harvest was generally very good in Champagne, but there may be challenges to come. The French retail market has seen a decline in sales of champagne – the top end is still running strongly but the some of the less good high volume brands are suffering and so we will probably see a certain amount of price cutting again soon. And the UK sold one million less bottles of champagne in 2018. As you may have heard me say here before, traditionally the rise and fall of champagne sales have acted as a bellwether to economic prosperity but we shall see soon if the two continue to sit side by side.

Gite to rent in Burgundy

As you may know we own a charming gite, L’Ancien Domaine, just five minutes from Beaune in Burgundy, that is available for you to rent. Our nearest villages are Pommard, Volnay, Meursault – not bad references for wine! Sleeping six in three double en-suite bedrooms, with a kitchen, dining room, sitting room and a TV room, this makes an ideal base for your trips around the Burgundian vineyards. In addition, trips to interesting wine producers can be organised for you and recommendations given for local restaurants. Visit www.lanciendomaine.fr for many more details or drop me an e-mail on ardres@boursot.co.uk.

New: Delivering wine in the UK

We deliver wines legally, cost-effectively and quickly into the UK. We suggest this service to those of you who are perhaps too busy to hop across the Channel to collect but who would still like to take advantage of our exclusive quality wines at great prices. Of course there always remains the option to hop across to stock up and thereby take fuller advantage of the very low French prices by filling your boot in either Ardres or Marquise.

To explain a little: when we despatch orders, we attach a customs declaration to one of the cases in your consignment because you have paid French prices which do not include UK duty and VAT. Technically, because you are not travelling with your alcohol purchases, you should pay the UK duty and VAT on your wine’s arrival (and even if you did, our wines would still offer fantastic value against their UK equivalents!). However, it appears that HMRC has more important things to worry about at the moment than chasing after a few pounds of duty. Of all the orders we have delivered into the UK over the last 12 months, we have not yet heard of one single British customer be requested for UK duty or VAT – which of course makes our wines of even greater value!

Our export prices are marginally different (+1,30€ a bottle) from our shop collected prices because of the additional packaging material that we have to use and then there is a small delivery charge, as below. We offer two qualities of delivery service to your UK address: “Express” normally takes a maximum of three working days and “Standard” takes up to a week.

Standard: 5 day delivery                    Express: 2 day delivery
Bottles                    Bottles
2-5 14,50 €                    2-5 24,00 €
6-11 16,00 €                    6-11 29,00 €
12-17 26,00 €                    12+ 36,00 €
18-23

24+
31,00 €

36,00 €

To place your order Simply go to www.boursot.fr/en/ and order your requirements on-line. Your order will be acknowledged automatically and delivery will normally be made two working days after the consignment leaves our cellars. You will also receive from us a link to access tracking of your order. If you should like any advice, please do not hesitate to contact me.

New Wines on Boursot's Wine List

I have recently brought back on to our new list three wines from Château Etang des Colombes in Corbières, including a new and interesting dry white made from Grenache blanc, Maccabeu and Bourboulenc. If you like those richer dry whites from the south, it’s worth trying.

The Cabernet Franc / Grenache from the organic vineyards of Domaine Bassac ran out recently and rather than wait for another bottling, I decided to take some of their new superior blend called Le Manpôt. It has wonderfully opulent rich fruit and it’s such an interesting combination of contrasting grape styles.

You will also find our selection of red and white Burgundy has been increased again.

Our list is updated monthly and can always be accessed through the View/Print Wine List button on the home page of our site. In the event that you see a previous version of the price list, try pressing Ctrl and F5 simultaneously on your computer so as to refresh the web page.

If there is something that attracts your eye now, and that you'd like us to put on one side for you, just say and we'll be happy to arrange it.

For Our Investors

Our investment offer to our private circle of customers has an annual 8% interest payable in your choice of wine so if you have taken part, don’t forget to come and collect your “interest”. If you have not made it over recently, don’t worry you will not lose any rights and you can simply catch up when you do come to Ardres.

If you should be tempted to take part and would like documentation, please e-mail me and I shall be pleased to send it to you.

In Conclusion

We are told regularly that our offering is so much more exciting and better priced than the equivalent retail operation in Britain. It is unlikely that you will read a review on us in the British media, even though we have been told so often that we are newsworthy! We have found that your word of mouth continues to be our most reliable source of new customers. So, if you are happy with what we do, please help us by telling your wine loving friends (and gain yourself a bottle of champagne!), or you could refer your friends to our "Receive Monthly Newsletter" button on the home page of www.boursot.co.uk. And if you’re happy, mention us on TripAdvisor – it all helps.

As with all our wines, we stand by our guarantee to take back any resaleable bottles if you find that the wine is not to your taste or if you have too many bottles left over after a party.

Bruno, Steven, Jean-Bertrand and I hope to see you in Ardres or Marquise again very soon, whether it's for our delicious and easy to enjoy Petit Pont Réserve wines at around £3.80 a bottle or whether it's for something more exclusive for your special dinner parties.

Don’t forget to get ahead of the next Brexit deadline…

A très bientôt

With all best wishes
