Newsletters

January, 2007

Dear Customer,

My apologies for the recent lack of newsletters – I know there's no excuse, but one of my New Year's resolutions is to try and maintain these newsletters even if I am too “busy” – a good problem to have!

After a good eventful 2006, you can expect to see soon the fruition of some further ideas. Coupled with a reorganisation of our sister company, Over The Top Tours, I believe that 2007 should prove to be an exciting year – one that I hope might draw you closer to us.

So, one of the first things you may have noticed here is that we have adopted a new system for e-mailing you our newsletter and I do hope that you will find it easy to use. My grappling with the new technology has been part of the reason for my delay in getting you this mailing, but many of the links will (or should!) take you through to different parts of our website which has been up and running for some months now.

I suggest that you continue to advise us if you know there are certain wines that you definitely wish to pick up. We can then pull out your orders before you get here - there's nothing more frustrating than coming here to find the person before you waltzing off with the last of the very stock that you had wanted!

Normally we are closed on Sundays and Mondays but if you wish to come on either of these days or indeed at any other “out of hours” time, just let us know and we can arrange that someone is here to give you the wines you ordered. Over the last few months some of you will have met George Adams who stands in here from time to time. Having had a good deal of experience of wine retailing in this area, he will be an invaluable asset as the company develops.

Our next Gourmet Dinner will be on Saturday 24th February when you can enjoy one of our high quality dinners at the excellent Restaurant Le Cygne in Saint-Omer. We will be joined by the urbane Philippe Jonquères d'Oriola who owns the 12th century château de Corneilla a few miles north of the Pyrenees, and we will of course be showing a selection of his delicious but reasonably priced wines. For those of you who don't know, all our events are run in English, and I do strongly commend this evening to you, but there are only 25 places available. Remember: first-come, first-served! For further details click here: DINNER.

I have been heartened by those many customers who enjoy the entire experience here. Come, like them, on one of our special day trip return fares from £25 (see TRAVEL OFFER) and have a good time in Ardres and enjoy some of the things for which France is famous, such as a leisurely lunch (at a fraction of the price that you would pay in the UK) or stock up on cheeses, charcuterie and other French delicacies.

Ardres is about much, much more than that old fashioned “booze cruise”, even though you will save yourself a fortune by buying your wines here. Many of our new customers have told me they'd never realised that a town of such charm existed so close to Calais and that henceforth they would abandon any idea of going back to the likes of “the dreaded Cité Europe”.

Currently many of our wines are exclusive to us and are not available in the UK but from May we plan to offer you a home delivery service in case you should have run short. Clearly there will be an additional cost, which must include the UK duty but at least you will be able to keep topped up for special dinner parties until you next get over here. There will still be savings over equivalent UK wines and of course especially on champagne! You will be able to order your wines through our website and have them delivered to your home or office within a few days, wherever you are situated in the UK. I am working on it and will be in touch.

Our official launch weekend went extremely well and I would like to thank the several people who wrote in afterwards. One such example was:-

That really was a wonderful and truly glittering launch and an extremely enjoyable weekend altogether. Congratulations on superb planning, it was all so interesting and well-thought out and after all these years (decades) we have both discovered what a fascinating history Ardres has. (VA)

Belated thanks for a wonderful weekend. We tasted some tremendous wines and exceptional food and it was good to see your shop painted and pampered ready for business. We do wish you every success for the future. Thank you too for the interesting tours and history of Ardres, which made the weekend even more special. (MH)

For a further report and pictures of the weekend, follow this link: LAUNCH WEEKEND.

As a result of the popularity of that weekend, I have decided that each autumn we will run a similar event at which our customers can explore the town's history free of charge, attend a Masterclass, a large tasting of our wines - and of course a Gourmet Dinner. More details will follow closer to the time.

In wanting to keep this covering e-mail short, this is probably not the place to produce our regular report on some of the latest news in the wine trade. This feature, and others, will be put up on the website soon, so do check for updates regularly.

There are several interesting new wines on our list including:-

  • A full-flavoured Merlot from the Languedoc at under £3
  • A dry flavoursome Gros Manseng-Sauvignon from Gascony at £3.25
  • A full fruity red Beaune
  • A red Sancerre - made of course from Pinot Noir
  • A rich Grand Cru Saint-Emilion (6 in a wooden case) at just £10
  • Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label champagne
  • Moët & Chandon champagne
  • Dom Pérignon champagne

and a few others … offering you an even wider selection of quality wines at our amazingly low French prices. To see and print our complete selection just follow this link: WINE LIST

And finally our Offer this month is from the exclusive Champagne, Pol Roger. Many of you will know this House already but this is one of the few Grande Marques to remain family-run. I have been personally associated with this house literally all my life, and our vineyard trips to Champagne always include a visit to Pol Roger. On one of our last vineyard trips, some people were telling me they knew we couldn't be going to Pol Roger because “they didn't do visits”! Their jaws were still on the ground as they met Messrs. de Billy and Pol Roger who have been running the company for many years who then took us around their cellars and into a tasting of all their cuvées. Their quality is of the highest – ask anyone who knows about Champagne and you'll get the same answer.

Prices of Champagne are rising again as stocks dwindle in the face of fast rising global demand, so if you appreciate good Champagne but don't want to spend a fortune, this makes the ideal moment to stock up. This is a one-off offer and you will not find such great Champagne at such an attractive price. It's just £15 per bottle – compare that against the so-called “Special Offers” in the UK!!

We have an allocation at this price so once it has gone, that's it… so ORDER NOW. Your orders can be kept here until you arrive to collect. See OFFER OF THE MONTH.

That's about it for this month. I look forward to seeing you here again soon.

All best wishes

Guy
