June, 2007
So, the French elections are now out of the way. It will be interesting to see the reaction of the people if and when some of the various promised changes are implemented. For what it's worth, I believe there are troubles galore to come (perhaps not quite as great as those of 1789 but certainly as great as the Thatcher transition years). In the longer term one hopes to be able to see them as good news for this beautiful country.
And so to Wine: Our last offer on Champagne Pol Roger sold out and has now gone up to its permanent price of £17.75 (€26,00) – still inexpensive against the British price. We are now reducing the price of Veuve Clicquot, Yellow Label Champagne to £19.75 (€29,00) so this may be a good time for you to take advantage.
You can now see a selection of new wines on our list (click on these words to view that list) and below I will try and enlarge upon some of these new wines.
In a previous “incarnation” I bought some excellent Alsace wines from Robert Faller et Fils, a family-run business in the picture postcard town of Ribeauvillé – these are wines of high quality which in my view compare very favourably with the revered, and much more expensive, Trimbach. We are offering you a large selection of wines from Faller at exceptionally reasonable prices starting at just £4.50 making huge savings over the UK prices of such wines – refreshing in more ways than one. .
Other new wines include:-
- The soft juicy Côtes du Ventoux (£2.50) that used to sell so successfully at The Wine Collection
- A Fleurie and a Pouilly Fuissé at just £5.75
- More Rosés for the spring and summer
- More Clarets - Haut-Médoc, Grand Cru Saint-Emilion, Pauillac and Pomerol
- More Loire - Anjou-Villages Brissac, Bourgueil, Saumur-Champigny, the Vendée and a fabulously grapey Montlouis Sec – the star of our recent
- Gourmet Dinner at Château Les Tourelles.
- More Rhône wines from Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage, Gigondas, Saint-Joseph and Vacqueyras.
- A well-reputed Cahors which has much of the “old style” Cahors character without being overly tannic and inaccessible!
- A light but flavoursome Semillon-based white wine, Cuvee des Conti from Château Tour des Gendres in Bergerac
- With our prices starting at just £1.50 per bottle we now have, pretty much, something for everyone.
Our Offer until the end of June is on a remarkable Rosé from one of the Rhône's finest vineyard areas – from the bio-dynamic Domaine Montirius, no less. With some help from the friendly proprietors, the Saurels, we have managed to reduce the price to you from €9,90 (£6.75) to €5,60 (£3.75) until stocks run out / the end of June. If you wish to take advantage, as always please book your requirements so we can put the cases on one side for you.
Many of you will know that Montirius is a domaine that we have followed for some time and increasingly it is impressing the world's wine critics, including Robert Parker whose opinions have such an enormous influence on the buying patterns of American wine drinkers. An interview I conducted with the Saurels is found on this link. Here they explain a little of their philosophy about bio-dynamic viticulture, and at the foot of the article you will see the range of their wonderful wines that we hold in stock including their incredible Gigondas made from vines planted in 1925.
As one of our clients, you can continue to benefit from our cross-channel Travel Offers which will continue for you through the summer. Prices start at just £25 for a day return trip. Don't forget that to get these good rates you need to call up 0870 2642644 and quote our code “Wine Co”.
If you wish to give the ultimate present to a wine lover, there is an extra-ordinary offer under For Sale. Your offers are invited for this distinctive car number plate. And also, don't forget to visit our sister company, Over The Top Tours on www.overthetoptous.net if you could be interested in taking a group of people to a vineyard area - these trips are really good fun whilst being illuminating. Compliments from happy clients don't stop coming!
Recently I have been in Bordeaux tasting many of the 2006 red and white wines. This is a vintage that will provide clarets that vary between good and very good, but they will not be outstanding in the way that the 2005s were. I will write more background information about these wines shortly.
Unfortunately (?) I have not had the time recently to organise any Gourmet Dinners. However, our big Anniversary Weekend on 13th-14th October has already received advance bookings, and if you are interested I suggest advising us as soon as possible as inevitably places are limited.
Over that weekend, there will be a wine tasting of a full selection of our wines in our shop, a Wine Masterclass, Historic Overground Tours of Ardres as well as Underground Visits to Ardres' silos and bastions. The jewel in that weekend will be the Burgundy Gourmet Dinner hosted by Paul Bouchard at the Hotel l'Atlantic in Wimereux.
More soon, but in the meantime we look forward to seeing you here in picturesque Ardres again shortly.
With kind regards
Guy
